Chapter Ten: Ideas about the future

To me chapter ten had many great ideas and Bill Joy wrote an essay called “From Why the future Doesn’t need us” which he wrote about how technology is so advanced that soon robots will be taking over us. Machines will be making decision for us and society will be so dependent on machines that it will be really hard for them to shut them down. Not only that, but humans won’t be needed anymore to work. Bill Joy believes that it will get to the point where machines will slowly extinct the human race. Another idea that was presented in this chapter was from the author Alvin Toffler who wrote “From the future shock” and in this essay he talks about how the human race is so advanced in technology that soon enough humans will be able to manipulate genes that can create a new version of humans. Even to the point to not need any organ transplant because the organs will be man made for humans to be able to live longer.

Chapter Nine: The human mind

The mind can be a very tricky tool for any human being that does not learn to control it. It can be very powerful or very harmful. The mind works in mysterious ways; you can have anything you want in life if you put your mind to it. If a person visualizes what they want, they picture it for a few minutes every day and believe that it’s already theirs, and then slowly your mind will believe you already have it until you get what you wanted. However; the mind can be tricky at times putting bad thoughts in a person’s head. Your mind is constantly being controlled by others around you. If you let them control over your mind you lose your mind to being tricked. A person needs to learn how to dominate their minds and not let your mind dominate over you. Once your mind dominates you, you can never trust it again.

Chapter Eight: Hip-Hop music's new generation

In a way i do agree with Chang that hip-hop has come to be how the generation sees the world. In the world we live in today, there are many bad words said and things done because of the songs our children our listening to. As children we want to imitate our idols and most of these rappers, unfortunately are idols to our kids. I remember growing up and looking up to n'sync and backstreet boy, where the songs were about love and friendships. Now the songs are about profanity and drugs. But not every rapper and singer give out the wrong message, like for example Beyonce, Jennifer Hudson and Adele. These types of singers with their songs give out good message to the population. But in today's generation, teenagers want to hear all bad music; there are more demands for profanity music than there is for any other. So it does make it mainstream because mostly all of the audience want to hear is about sex and drugs.

Chapter Seven: The importance of environmental awareness and / or environmental activism

The importance of environmental awareness is very crucial at the moment since the weather changes have changed in the past years drastically. It’s important more than ever to make changes so our earth gets its balance that we stole from nature. It does not matter how small of a difference it makes for someone to care for the environment because every little bit counts. A person can start with environmental awareness by shutting down their air conditioner, not over using paper or planting trees. It is important for people to start getting involved more and create Environmental activism groups that will help protect the environment.

When people start to become more involved in the environment and begin to take care of our earth then little by little we will begin to see our earth healthier and with less weather changes. We have to think about our children’s kids and new generation. They will have to pay the consequences of our actions for destroying our beautiful earth.

Chapter Six: Foucault Prison

Foucault claims that there is a reluctance to be rid of in the prison because he believes that the prison systems are a discipline that was developed in the eighteen and nineteen century because of the economic problems. Illegalities mixed itself with the relations between the social classes. This led to a conflict between the upper and lower orders which led the administrators in the society to turn the problems of illegality into the concept of a criminal underclass. The lower order was a very large group so this brought problems. There was no other solution but the delinquency, creating a sub-class it would be easier to identify the delinquent and control them by using the same techniques from the other society and the problem would be resolved. The carceral system is a very powerful system but in other ways it can be extremely dangerous, but Foucault still believes that one day it can change.

Chapter Five: War Stories

In chapter 5, I found this interesting story called “The War Prayer” by Mark Twain. This deals with soldiers going off to the war, the pastors and family members pray for victory before the soldiers leave. This old man comes into church and tells the people to be careful for what they are praying for. The people were praying for victory but at the same time the old man tried to tell them that by praying for victory there were also praying for innocent lives to be killed, children will be left without fathers, and wives without husbands. The old man begins to say a prayer to let the people know how the prayer should be done, but at the end of the story they think this man is just crazy and makes no sense. I think this story is a great way to let people know when they pray they should not pray for what they need or want, but to also prays for your neighbors needs and for your enemies as well.

Chapter Four: Love story

Many years ago, there was a woman that lived with her mother and her grandfather. This young women was 21 years old and was already divorced from a husband that used to abuse her. She married at age 18 and divorced at age 20. She lived very poorly and barley studied because of the long distance and she had no car. This women had lost any hope for a bright future so she spent her days cleaning and cooking for her family. Until one day she found a job at a law firm as an assistant, there she met a lawyer that would bring in paper work. She never looked at him because she never thought she was pretty, but he thought she was the most beautiful women in this world. Weeks and months passed and she finally gave the young man a chance to take her out. After three months they married and she went of to live with him. She was now known as the wife of a lawyer and she lived a life that she had never seen before. Six months later she got pregnant and i was born, when i turned one my parents decided to leave cuba and give me a better life in the United States, they struggled a lot in america the first few years. My father was able to start a new business and give me a better life and a future.
