In chapter 5, I found this interesting story
called “The War Prayer” by Mark Twain. This deals with soldiers going off to
the war, the pastors and family members pray for victory before the soldiers leave.
This old man comes into church and tells the people to be careful for what they
are praying for. The people were praying for victory but at the same time the
old man tried to tell them that by praying for victory there were also praying
for innocent lives to be killed, children will be left without fathers, and wives
without husbands. The old man begins to say a prayer to let the people know how
the prayer should be done, but at the end of the story they think this man is
just crazy and makes no sense. I think this story is a great way to let people
know when they pray they should not pray for what they need or want, but to
also prays for your neighbors needs and for your enemies as well.
